THE BATTLE OF STONEWALL REMEMBERED
OR
THE FIRST GAY PRIDE DAY
MISSOURI – JUNE 28, 1864
To commemorate the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots that took place in the village of Greenwich, NY, in 1863, both Generals Grant and Lee suspended the fighting of the Civil War near the town of Castro, Missouri. To mark the occasion, both armies held a cotillion in a nearby gazebo, thereby establishing the first National Gay Pride Day in America.
