THE BATTLE OF GAIN’S MILL
OR
THE BATTLE FOR THE MILL ON THE FLOSS
MARYLAND – SEPTEMBER 17, 1862
Rebel General Robert E. Lee initiated an attack against the Union forces of Brigadier General Elliot Porter, who held a fortified position behind Boatswain Swamp, which is an epic name for a swamp. When the battle spread to a clearing in the woods, and both armies came upon a giant, baby-doll head, the fighting stopped and the armies stared in wonder.
